Setting Goals: 3 Things To Do, 3 Things To Avoid
May 1, 2008
Are you a planner? Do you like to set goals? If not, you should start setting goals today. Setting goals helps you create an easier path to success or completion. I’m going to show you three things you should do when setting your goals and three things you should avoid.
To Do:
1) Plan smart. Don’t set unrealistic goals. It’s highly improbable that you will lose 50 pounds in 3 weeks. Instead, set a realistic goal to exercise daily, change your eating habits and practice positive thinking.
2) Think long-term. One thing people tend to do when they set goals is to think too short-term. Short-term goals are great, but they serve a totally different purpose from long-term goals. Long-term goals tell you what you want (the end result). Short-term goals are the vehicles that carry you there.
3) Create your back-up plan. No goal should be without a solid back-up plan. Ever heard the phrase “Don’t put all your eggs in one basket”? What happens if something unexpected occurs? Do you have a plan to compensate for that?
To Avoid:
1) The procrastination trap. Everybody gets sidetracked sometimes. Just don’t allow that to lead into procrastination, which is the biggest time thief of all times. Stay on track.
2) Sketchy details. Know what you want and it won’t be hard to get it. Set solid, descriptive, bold goals in great detail.
3) Selling yourself short. Don’t think that your goal is so lofty that you can’t reach it. If you set a reasonable goal, even if it takes you some time to get there, think of all the progress and personal growth you will experience.
