The Secret of Happiness
Happiness seems to be the single thread that ties many people together because everyone seeks happiness at some point in their life. Happiness is not elusive, yet it seems that many people have trouble knowing what happiness truly is, or how to find it for themselves.
Happiness is defined as a state of well-being characterized by emotions ranging from contentment to intense joy. Let’s break down this definition to get a clearer picture of exactly what happiness is…
First, take note that happiness is defined by your emotions. Let that thought soak in for a minute. Now read it again: Happiness is defined by your emotions. That means you can choose to be happy, or not. Happiness is clearly and solely dependent upon your attitude and thoughts.
Your emotions, ranging from contentment to joy, is what defines that feeling of happiness you can experience. Contentment is simply being happy with your lot in life. If you are crippled, but can accept your handicap as the way it was meant to be, you will experience happiness every day. But if you look at your handicap as a negative attribute that hinders you from living your life to its fullest, then you’ll be miserable every single day.
Your attitude defines your happiness…or unhappiness.
The secret of happiness doesn’t lie in having all the things you think you need. Many people say that if they just had a couple more thousand dollars, or a bigger house, or a better job, then their life would be better and they’d be happier.
The truth is, no matter how much physical possessions you own, those things can never define your happiness. You must reach deep within yourself and become content with your life as it is. That is when you’ll learn the true secret of happiness.
5 Ways to Find True Happiness
Are you a big ball of gloom and doom all the time? Feeling unhappy is a miserable thing. The longer you go feeling that way, the harder it is to change it. Here are some simple ways to find true happiness for yourself.
1. Expect to be happy. If this sounds too simple that’s because it is simple. Happiness isn’t something that falls into your lap. Happiness is a state of mind. When you wake up every morning expecting to be happy, chances are you will be happy.
2. Follow your bliss. All too often people do things they think are expected of them, rather than things they are passionate about. Rather than following the norms, do something for once that you’ve been wanting to do.
3. Be present. Do you waste a lot of time thinking about what might have been? Do you fret over what could happen next month? Stop giving so much time and energy to the past and the future. Simply be present in today.
4. Give thanks. Did you know that people who express their gratitude often are less likely to be depressed? Saying a simple, “I appreciate you,” or, “Thank you,” can open up a whole new realm of happiness that you’ve never experienced.
5. Call upon a Higher power. While there are numerous denominations and religious affiliations available today, the one thing they all have in common is faith in a Higher power. Spend time meditating, praying, or singing—or whatever you do—to call upon that Higher power that you believe in.
Staying Grateful Despite Problems
Do your problems loom so large over you that you don’t think there’s any possible way to enjoy this day? The trick is staying grateful, despite your problems. Look, it’s no secret. We all have problems that we deal with on a daily basis. Have you ever wondered why it seems like some people can laugh and smile, even though they have problems that weigh on their minds?
Their secret isn’t a secret at all. It’s all in your mindset.
You can choose to be happy, regardless of what problems you face. Or, you can choose to let your problems weigh you down so much that you can’t sleep at night and you walk around with a sour look on your face.
It is a proven fact that people who seem happy simply choose to not allow their problems to get the best of them. Not only that, but they have a positive outlook on life. They believe that no matter what problems arise, they are going to make it through them just fine.
Even though you are facing surmounting problems, stop for a moment and ask yourself what is GOOD in your life right now.
- What is going right for you?
- Is your family healthy?
- Do you have a job?
- Are you steadily working to change your situation?
Choose to remain grateful in the middle of your difficult situation. Find a way to put a smile on your face, no matter what you’re going through.
You can choose to suffer, or choose to be grateful. What do you choose?
Are You Letting Fear Steal Your Dream?
What dreams do you have for yourself and your life? None, you say? Why not? Everybody has dreams. If you don’t know what your dreams are, then it’s time to take a look at why that is. One of the biggest reasons why people forego personal dreams is because of fear.
Fear of Failure
The first preventative fear is the fear of failure. This fear often stops those who might have never been able to live up to their parents’ expectations. Perhaps you feel like you are a disappointment to your parents. Maybe you chose a different path in life than they may have expected you to.
The fear of failure is harsh enough to stop you from following after your dreams. But do you really want to allow that to happen?
Fear of Success
You might think that being afraid of success is ridiculous. But there are numerous people out there right now who have given up their life’s dream because they are afraid of what would happen if they succeed.
If you are one such person, you have to realize that succeeding is only the first step towards your dream. There is no dead end road, only a winding path.
If you’ve been letting your fear of failure, or fear of success, stop you from dreaming or going after your dream, you have to let that go right now. At the end of your life, do you want to be filled with regret for never having gone after what you wanted? Or would you like to be filled with happiness and fulfillment because you squashed your fears and went for it anyway?
