Are Goals Really Necessary?

Lots of hype goes on at the beginning of a new year. In fact, you’ve probably read and heard much of it already. Every new year people get their pens and notepads out and write down all the things they want to accomplish before the end of the year. The majority of these people never reach these goals.

Are you such a person who sets goals every year but somehow always manages to find yourself having not completed any of them at the end of the year? You’re definitely not alone. Others, just like you, wonder if goals are really necessary. Do they really work? And if so, then why don’t they work for you?

The truth is, goals are not a necessity. The reason why so many people set goals and resolutions at the beginning of every year is usually because they feel like they have to. The new year is often compared to a clean slate, or a fresh start. For some reason everybody jumps on the bandwagon of using that to set lots of goals that will never be reached.

This lack of success almost always creates a feeling of frustration and leads people to say, “I quit.” Then by the end of the year, when they realize they didn’t accomplish much, they start the cycle all over again with the next new year.

Why not stop this vicious cycle now? Instead of setting goals this new year, try something different. Focus on completing one thing right now. Forget about what you want to do within the entire year. Instead, set one tiny goal and work on it until it’s done. Then move on to something else.
