Is your desk taking on a life of its own? You’re busy working hard and have little time to keep your desk cleared off. The problem with this is that a disorganized desk leads to decreased productivity. The following are quick steps to help you get your desk organized:
- Start from scratch. Get a cardboard box and take everything off the top of your desk and place it into the box. As you do this, throw away what obviously needs to be chunked.
- Organize your desk drawers. Desk drawers have a tendency to become the catch-all. It’s so easy to just open a drawer and throw something inside to hide it real quick. Thus, you’ll find your drawers in quite a disarray and quite fast, too. Buy a few drawer organizers or small plastic crates to organize your pens, sticky notes, paper clips, etc.
- Keep your planner in plain view. When your desk is in disarray, it can be challenging to keep up with your schedule. Often times, your planner is buried beneath a rubble of mess, and rather than dig for the planner, you opt for jotting appointments on a note pad or a handy piece of paper. These things get lost in the shuffle of the mess on your desk, and then you start missing appointments. Keeping your desk clean will keep you on track.
- Take care of your paperwork. One thing that seems to litter every desk is paperwork. From bills to invoices, paperwork can be a huge space waster. Plus, once it piles up, it’s much more difficult to take care of it and takes a much longer time. Create file folders for every category and get busy filing those papers now. Once you have a system in place, it will be easier to automatically file paperwork when you’re finished with it, instead of piling it on top of your desk.
- Use a desktop organizer. A quick visit to your local office supply store will net you with lots of excellent organizational tools. One such tool is a desktop organizer, which is perfect for maintaining desktop neatness, while keeping those things handy that you use every day, like lotion, lip gloss, pictures, etc.
- Practice a quick pick-up at the end of the day. In order to keep your desk cleaned off once it’s organized, you should put a quick pick-up in motion at the end of each day. This will help keep things tidy and in order.
